Why choose Comvita Mānuka honey

Why choose Comvita Mānuka honey

With 50 years experience in Mānuka honey, Comvita was one of the early pioneers of Mānuka honey in New Zealand.

Started by Claude Stratford when he was in his 60's as his retirement hobby, he was focused on honey and medicinal bee products. Alan Bougen was managing a coastal property on Great Barrier Island, reviving the bee hives on the property, and had contacted Claude for some advice on bee keeping.

What started as Bee Keeping 101 turned into Business 101, as they realsied how similar their values and views were.

Both with a passion for preventative health, it wasn't about making sick people better - their focus ran deeper; they wanted to improve people's health, benefit the community and the natural world around us.

50 years later, Comvita has never lost sight of this vision.

Commitment to purity

With their roots in beekeeping, there was always a very clear picture of raw honey as being the only real honey. As beekeepers, they knew that the only way to produce real honey was to treat it in the most respectful way. This ethos is still deeply embedded in all Comvita does.

We have developed testing for our honey, so that it meets the import regulations for some of the strictest regions in the world, including Western Australia. We also have extensively researched the stability of each major compound, and can accurately predict how long the potency of the honey will last.

The Rising Demand for Mānuka Honey: How Imitations Flood the Market

As the demand for Manuka honey has surged, some products on the market may contain artificially added Methylglyoxal (MGO) to mimic the health benefits of genuine Mānuka honey. This practice not only misleads consumers but also compromises the authenticity and therapeutic properties that true Mānuka honey is known for.

Other misleading practices include:

Overheating: Heating honey can increase MGO concentrations artificially, but it can also degrade other beneficial compounds, affecting the overall quality and health benefits.

Blending: Some producers may blend genuine Manuka honey with lower-quality honey that has had MGO added artificially, creating a product that appears to have high MGO levels.

Chemical Additives: Certain chemical processes can be used to increase the MGO content, but these methods compromise the honey's natural properties and authenticity.

Dilution with Syrups: Mixing Manuka honey with syrups that contain MGO or similar compounds can give the illusion of higher MGO content while reducing the overall quality of the honey.

Comvita's Quality Assurance

Comvita proudly uses the UMF™ rating system, a trusted independent quality assurance standard for New Zealand Mānuka honey. This rigorous process involves sending samples for external testing, ensuring that every jar of our Mānuka honey is authentic and free from artificial manipulation.

With our modelling on the compounsd, and our own internal testing, we are able to guarantee the UMF level for 3 years.

Manuka Honey: Uncompromising Quality You Can Trust

To ensure you’re getting the real deal, always look for products that carry reputable certifications, such as the UMF™ rating. These certifications guarantee that the MGO levels are naturally occurring and derived from authentic Mānuka honey, providing you with the true health benefits this unique product offers.
